The past year has been incredibly successful for Orangeism in Limavady. The Twelfth demonstration in July was without doubt the most successful and enjoyable we have held in several years. We were rightly proud and immensely privileged as we were joined by the Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master and County Grand Master as we led the parade to the Field in the 200th year of Limavady District.
As I sat on the platform that day, surveying the Orange family enjoying the festivities and listening to the Grand Master speaking, I allowed myself to consider the successes and disappointments of the 9 years that I have been at the helm of Limavady District. While there have been disappointments, my overwhelming feelings were of great humility and pride.
I have had the privilege to work with some of the most dedicated and talented Brethren, not just in Limavady District, but throughout Londonderry County and City. I have been honoured to be in the presence of some of our most senior Brethren as they were rewarded for their long service to our Institution. I have also been proud and indeed blessed to have our District Secretary, Bro. Jonathan Holmes by my side every step of the way throughout those 9 years. Without the dedication, hard work and unstinting service of Bro. Holmes, the successes enjoyed by our District could not have been achieved and we all owe him and his predecessor Bro. Cuthbert McKeegan a great debt of gratitude.
As we look forward to the year ahead, 2012 will see us celebrate two significant anniversaries. The first part of the year will see us commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth II. This is certainly a milestone to mark and one that none of us will ever see or experience again. Limavady District will be to the fore in organising various events and we will announce these shortly.
2012 also marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant and the second half of the year will be taken up with celebrating this historic event. Again, the District Lodge will be organising several events, many of which the public will be able to take part in, keep checking back on our website for news of all our events.
Lately we have seen resurgence in our Private Lodges and in our local marching bands and I have no doubt the year ahead will see that continue. I am both humbled and proud to have been re-elected to serve as WDM of the District Lodge for another year, especially such a significant year. I am delighted that the DDM, W.Bro. Mark Smyth, a leader in his own right, has also been re-elected, together with the other District Officers. I believe we have an incredibly strong team of District Officers, each using his own skills and talents for the furthering of Orangeism in our District.
I look forward to the year ahead with renewed enthusiasm and confidence and have no doubt that 2012 will be just as successful for Orangeism as 2011 was.
